NuPod is designed and manufactured to be a waffle raft slab system with components placed to comply to Australian Standards AS 2870-2011.
The installation of NuPod® is very similar to the principles of a standard polystyrene waffle raft slab.
Polystyrene pods are placed creating a grid of 110mm wide ribs at 1200mm centres. NuPod is placed creating a grid of 110mm wide ribs with 1100mm centres. This results in a NuPod slab being stiffer (stronger) than a polystyrene pod slab.
NuPod is made from up to 100% recycled plastic which costs more than polystyrene. However, NuPod is designed to be stackable resulting in lower freight cost as NuPod takes up less room. So the overall cost to deliver to site is competitive. In regional areas it sometimes costs less.
Overall concrete volume is very similar to polystyrene pods but NuPod will generally use a bit more due to the rib centre’s being closer. However, NuPod is easier to install.
There are fewer items to place in the NuPod system. The built-in coupler locks everything together, so it is quicker to install.
Comparison to other void former systems for a 176m2 slab:
- NuPod pod slab – 352 pieces
- Polystyrene “Waffle” pod slab – 530 pieces
- Other available plastic pod slab – 1259 pieces
NuPod is a substitute for polystyrene pods so the same cover is required as per the Australian Standards.
Good building practice requires that subgrades are prepared to deliver a level building pad. The better the site preparation, the better the final result in concrete usage will be.
